Abstract / Description
Despite increasing research on Intellectual Humility (IH) in recent years, most research has been conducted in the USA. We argue that this is due to a lack of scales that are validated in languages other than English. The goal of this study is to translate three established IH scales to German and validate them within Germanophone contexts. We plan to recruit participants who are proficient German speakers and at least 18 years old. Items of three Intellectual Humility scales (CIHS, Krumrei-Mancuso & Rouse, 2016; SIHS, Hoyle et al., 2016; LIHS, Leary et al., 2017) were translated from English into German by two independent researchers. Based on expert ratings (n = 8), translations were selected, revised, and pre-tested (n = 13) with an online-survey. We aim to validate the scales plus an already existing German IH scale with an online-survey (N = 697). To assess discriminant validity, we will include scales for social desirability, cognitive closure, need for cognition, HEXACO honesty-humility, and openness. Incremental validity is assessed by measuring affective polarization. Confirmatory Factor Analyses and further analyses will be conducted with JASP and R.
