Abstract / Description
Abstract: Most psychotherapeutic schools attribute a special importance to emotions. The following article outlines some basic assumptions of Gestalt theory regarding the significance of emotions in the life of humans as well as in the therapeutic process. A distinction is made between feelings in the epistemological sense (as a certain state of total consciousness) and feelings in the phenomenological sense, which usually have a carrier that "has" these feelings. Feelings in the epistemological sense are a holistic dynamic event, which includes processes in the experienced person as well as processes in the experienced environment and in the interrelation between both. In a holistic sense, feelings are a concise statement of who you are in which world and what results directly from it, which needs and goals dominate this world and which forces are at work in it. In this sense, the fostering of emotional experience in psychotherapy is a component of clarification processes, not an end in itself. The lack of clear emotional experiences does not indicate a "personality deficit", but an unclear situation. Emotions in the epistemological sense are understood as psycho-physical events that people (and not only people) can perceive among themselves. These and other related core ideas on the Gestalt theory of feelings, which are particularly relevant to psychotherapy, are elaborated and commented on in this article using nine illustrative drawings.
