Ethical implications of some schools of psychotherapy

Abstract / Description
Abstract: Psychotherapeutic literature is predominantly concerned with developmental and personality theories, with patterns of disorders and treatment techniques, and less frequently with questions of ethics, meaningfulness or freedom. But psychotherapeutic schools and their theories are based on a conception of man peculiar to each of them, from which ethical considerations - often implicitly contained - can be derived. An attempt is made to present and critically evaluate these basic ethical positions of psychoanalysis, analytical psychology, individual psychology, Gestalt therapy, psychodrama, client-centered therapy and behavior therapy. The frequently postulated ethical relativism, which assumes different ethics, is contrasted with the ethical understanding of Gestalt theory, according to which there must be agreement on the generally valid conditions for human societies. For the founder of the Gestalt theory Max Wertheimer the understanding and the insight into the demands of a situation is the basis for all ethical considerations. In his view, factually required behavior is equivalent to morally right action. In this context, he emphasizes the importance of freedom for human beings and their actions. Besides freedom as a condition in a social field, he also sees freedom as a character quality of people's attitude, thinking and behavior. According to this, man should in principle be able to do what is ethically right if he is able to engage openly and freely with the situation in which he finds himself and to gain insight into the structure of the problem situation.
